A site receiving 500 sessions/day suddenly receives 5,000 sessions on a Tuesday. Legitimate traffic spikes have identifiable causes (viral content, email campaigns, PR). Unexplained spikes warrant investigation.

Signal 5 — Concentration in a single referrer or UTM

All the anomalous sessions arrive via the same referrer domain or identical UTM string. This is often click fraud (someone repeatedly clicking your Google Ads ads from the same source) or referral spam (programmatic traffic from fake referrer domains).

How to filter known bot sources

IP-based filtering (most reliable)

Admin → Data Streams → Web stream → More tagging settings → Define internal traffic → add the IP range as internal traffic with traffic_type = bot_traffic (instead of internal)

Then create a Data Filter: Admin → Data Filters → + Create filter → type: Internal Traffic → Filter name: "Bot IP Range" → filter dimension: Traffic Type → filter value: bot_traffic → set to "Active"

Limitation: Residential proxy bots use rotating IPs that are indistinguishable from legitimate residential users. IP filtering catches datacenter-based bots only.

Many spam hits come from referral sources that don't actually execute on your domain — they POST directly to the GA4 Measurement Protocol endpoint with fake dl (document location) parameters.
